Swiss Watch Advertising Jumps in 2011

In another sign that the Swiss watch market continues to grow even in the face of economic headwinds, Kantar Media and WatchTime report that spending on watch advertising in the United States jumped 16 percent in 2011 to $365 million.

Rolex ($46.9 million) and Breitling ($26.5 million) continue to lead the way for Swiss watchmakers. TAG Heuer is number three at $19.8 million spent.

Bulova (now part of Japan's Citizen Group) spent $26.4 million to lead non-Swiss watch manufacturers.

The French luxury brands turned in strong performances with Cartier ($21.1 million), Chanel ($17.7 million), Louis Vuitton ($7.2 million), Montblanc ($6.4 million), and Dior ($5.3 million) leading the way. Although these brands tend to make Swiss made watches, they aren't counted as Swiss companies here.

he global economic outlook for 2012 was forecasted to be in a recession thanks to the ongoing European debt crisis as well as the decelerated growth in the manufacturing sector of the Chinese markets. However that doesn’t seem to be a factor when it comes to the export of Swiss watches over the past 5 years, with record growth in the past 6 months.

The clearest indication of a strong growth in demand across Asia and Europe, in particular the luxury segment which experienced a double-digit rate of growth through the past half-year. The total exports for the past 6 months stands at CHF 10.1 billion, which is a 16.4% increase when compared to 2011. The indication also showed that the luxury watch segment with watches costing more than CHF 3,000 (export price) increased by 25.4%, signifying the strong demand for luxury watches over the more affordably priced ranges that were priced below the 3,000 Swiss franc mark.

In the first half of 2012, Asian markets in general have recorded high growth with Hong Kong, Japan and China leading the way with double-digit increases trailed by Singapore with a modest 6.7. Key European markets have also grown significantly with Germany showing an increase in 35.7% while the United Kingdom had an increase of 16.9%, followed by Italy at 8.6%. The real value of exports after being adjusted for inflation is roughly 13% for Switzerland, accounting for approximately 8% of that country’s total exports.
